The word 'Colorado' means 'colored red' in Spanish. The state was named after the Colorado River, which Spanish explorers named 'Río Colorado' for the red silt the river carried from the mountains.
On August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed an agreement saying that Colorado is a part of the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the "Centennial State" because it became a state one hundred years after the United States declared independence.
Colorado is the only U.S. state that is entirely above 1000 meters above sea level. It’s lowest point, 3,317 feet, is higher than the lowest point of any other state, and is higher than the highest point of 18 states. 75% of the land area of the U.S. with an altitude over 10,000 feet.
Colorado is an important state because Air Force Academy is in Colorado. Air Force Academy trains up to approximately 4,000 students a year. Their motto is, “Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do.”
